Housing Diversity Strategy

The housing challenge is one faced by Hume and suburbs across Melbourne. As our population grows, demand is created not only for more housing, but greater diversity in housing options.

When we prepared our community strategy, Hume Horizons 2040, the community told us they wanted to manage this population growth and facilitate more housing choice. Currently, 39% of our households comprise of only one or two people but only 10% of our homes have 1 and 2 bedrooms. The rest are 3, 4 and 5 bedroom homes. This means that if these smaller households want to live in our municipality and in their community, they often have no choice but to live in a larger home even if they don’t need one or want one.

Council is committed to ensuring that Hume is a place with a home for everyone. A draft Housing Diversity Strategy has been prepared to provide solutions to our community’s housing needs now and into the future. It sets out a plan to create greater housing diversity and direct new housing to the most appropriate locations.

Council endorsed the draft Housing Diversity Strategy for community consultation at its meeting on 12 August 2019.  The draft Strategy was available for community review and feedback throughout 2 September to 15 October 2019.  Thank you to all those who reviewed the Strategy; spoke to Council officers at community events in Shopping Centres and at public meetings; completed a survey; or made a submission.

 What are the next steps?
