Third-time’s a charm for new Hume Mayor

Advocating for better education outcomes and supporting youth employment are at the top of the agenda for new Mayor of Hume, Councillor Geoff Porter - local school teacher and lifelong Jacana resident.

The Meadow Valley Ward councillor was officially sworn in as Hume Mayor at a special Statutory Meeting of Council last night, after being elected by fellow Hume City Councillors at the weekend. Cr Porter becomes the first three-time Mayor at Hume City Council.

Aitken Creek Ward Councillor Carly Moore was elected Deputy Mayor.

“It is with sincere thanks to my fellow Councillors for supporting me in this honour; it is a privilege to be elected as the Mayor of Hume,” Cr Porter said.

“I will build on the work already completed, and take advantage of new opportunities as they arise.

“In particular, I believe it’s incredibly important for our community to have access to the infrastructure and services they need to be safe and healthy, as well as access to education and learning.

“If Victoria is the education state, I want to see Hume become the education precinct.

“In keeping with this, I am committed to programs and initiatives that will support local jobs and skills for people, especially for our young people.

“As Mayor, I will call on other levels of government, particularly in the lead up to the State Election next year, for their support and partnership approach to achieve positive outcomes for this community.”

Cr Porter also encouraged residents to play their part in supporting the Hume community and take actions like reporting instances of graffiti and illegal rubbish dumping.

“I am extremely proud of having grown up here, and I encourage our community to have pride in this great City,” Cr Porter said.

“I encourage you to be proactive residents – report things such as graffiti, dumped rubbish and litter - working together we can make a difference.”

During Cr Porter’s mayoral term, he will oversee the development of several exciting initiatives. This includes the start of construction of the $23 million Broadmeadows Town Hall redevelopment; the $19 million Hume Global Learning Centre - Sunbury; and $8.31 million Aitken Hill Community Centre in Craigieburn.

Significant projects already underway will also be completed in the year ahead including the $4 million Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre warm water pool; the $1.8 million Hume Hockey Centre in Craigieburn; and completion of the new $800,000 Sunbury Lawn Tennis Club Pavilion.
